All About Palma de Mallorca
The civilizational, cultural and most important political angle of the Balearics and Mallorca island is embedded in Palma’s capital, officially called “Palma de Mallorca.” The number of those inhabiting the famous Mediterranean island is about 870,000. The locals of Palma simply refer to it as “la Ciutat”—the city. Manacor is the second most inhabited part of the island which compared to the capital’s population is ten times smaller.
More details about Palma de Mallorca
The Balearics’ political power has a single focus in Palma. The conservative “Partido” is the current Balearic governor whose government house is a building with Marjocan character and Renaissance structure known as the “Consolat de Mar”—- formerly used as a maritime court. The parliament and the administration hover above the city center while the government House is down the ocean side. The town hall with its grand structure is also under the control of one of the members of the Partido Popular. The property was built in the year 1648 on the site that a medical hospital occupied. Opposite the town hall is the city’s dignitaries and major parties.
The “island council” is nearby and is in a Neo-gothic, animation-like castle building. The parliament building is just a few miles away and also has a rich Neo-gothic decor.
The extremely great political power with a common center in Palma dates back to centuries gone by and makes the sea the meaning that this island has. The documentary of Palma’s history is in diagrams and artifacts at the top of the round Believer Castle. There’s proof of the fact that people inhabited here 2000 years ago before Christ. “Palmaris Palmensis” (lat Palmeria, the palm of victory) was found in 123 BC by Quintus Metellus Caecillus, the Roman general after he defeated Majorca. From century to century, this “palm of victory” continue to thrive as a trading center. The Moors conquered Majorca in 902, and the city became the island’s Islamic capital—“Medina Maqurka.” At that time, the number of residents in the city was 35,000, and the city thrived under Muslim dominance. Palaces, mosques, and bathhouses were scattered about the city.
In 1229, a Christian army under the rule of James I, the king of Aragon, defeated “Medina Maqurka”. A Catholic king now inhabits the “Ciutat de Mallorca.” Arabs and Jews were converted by force or banished out of the city. A cathedral was built on the foundations of a mosque, and the magnificent citadel of Alumdainca was built on the stones of the Arab castle. A fortress wall was built on all sides of the town—the great fortifications have not completely disappeared. The Ciutat was often laid siege by the poor people of the neighborhood who were suffering from extreme hunger, but the riot for food always ended in a bloody manner.
Catedral la Seu” located in Palma
The “Catedral la Seu” is an ecclesiastical jewel that suits the church, city and the Middle Ages, situated in front of the king’s fortress. The Catedral la Seu ( that was built around 1230 - 1587, after which the core portal opened in 1601) is located in a beautiful topographical location. The cathedral is positioned on the elevated earth surface higher than the sea level. It resulted to “Paseo Maritimo” which was the single cathedral that the image was shown on the surface of Mediterranean. The amazing topographical position and fascinating architecture have both won the cathedral a special award. Today, in the man-made “Parc de la Mar,” you will love the reflected image of the fascia in the south.

Sculptures by Eduardo Chillida, Auguste Rodin, and Henry Moore, are now displayed in the “Palau March”, which used to be a palace in “Fundaciό Bartolomé March”, the Arts and Cultural Foundation.

The Art Nouveau building that used to be the “Grand Hotel,” hosts several cultural events.
